How Do Water Ionizers Work?

What is a water ionizer?

A water ionizer is an electrical appliance that connects to your water supply. Using UltraWater filtration technology and the process of electrolysis, the ionizer transforms ordinary tap water into clean alkaline, ionized, and hydrogen rich UltraWater.
A special attachment re-directs tap water out of the faucet, through the tubing, and into the water ionizer.
This is where the magic happens...
Inside the machine, the water is first filtered through our patented UltraWater filtration technology. The filtered water then passes into a chamber equipped with platinum-coated titanium electrodes. This is where the electrolysis takes place.
During the process of electrolysis, cations (positive ions) gather at the negative electrodes, creating reduced water (alkaline water). Anions (negative ions) gather at the positive electrodes, creating oxidized water (acidic water).
The reduced, ionized water comes out of the top spout of the ionizer and the oxidized water comes out of a separate hose leading into the sink.
Reduced water is what you use for drinking or cooking. Oxidized water is a sterilizing agent, and can be used for washing your hands, cleaning food or kitchen utensils, and treating minor wounds, and eczema.
Cations, positive ions, gather at the negative electrodes to create cathodic water (reduced water). Anions, negatively charged ions, gather at the positive electrode to make anodic water (oxidized water). The reduced water comes out of the faucet, and the oxidized water comes out of a separate hose leading into the sink. You can use reduced water for drinking or cooking. The oxidation potential of the oxidized water makes it a good cleaning agent, ideal for washing hands, cleaning food or kitchen utensils, and treating minor wounds.

Redox Potential Comparison

Compare these measurements of these three types of water: tap water before electrolysis, the reduced (alkaline) water made with a water ionizer, and the oxidized (acidic) water.
Reduction-oxidation (redox)
potential
  • Water Type: Tap Water
    Leads to: +400 – +500mV
    pH: 7
What it Means: Slight oxidation potential
  • Water Type: Reduced Water
    Leads to: -250 to -550mV
    pH: 9
What it Means: Strong reduction potential. Hydroxide ions increase alkalinity and concentrate essential minerals. Contains a surplus of hydrogen molecules that can be donated to free radicals.
  • Water Type: Oxidated Water
    Leads to: +700 to +800mV
    pH: 4
What it Means: Strong oxidation potential. A shortage of electrons giving it the ability to oxidize and sterilize.
